Frequently Asked Questions about the Item Collector
What is it?
Mainly it's an item collector, used to populate Lucy's item database .
Can it do anything else?
Yes, it also can save your character's equipment, stats, skills, etc.. to
an html file in the location you choose.
How does it work?
It passively sniffs the network traffic between the EQ servers and the client
using the pcap packet capture library (http://winpcap.polito.it,
http://www.tcpdump.org). It builds a local database of items it sees, and
uploads them to the central server when it sees a new one.
Will it lag me?
Nope, the network and processor resources used are minimal, especially with
quiet mode on (see further down). It only attempts to upload item stats
when an you first see an item, or its changed, and only actualy uploads the
item if the server doesnt have an up-to-date copy of it.
Why should I run it?
To help support Lucy's item database and keep it updated with the most current
versions of as much of the EQ item database as possible. You also might
just want to use the profile collection feature. It's encouraged that
you run it as much as possible.
Just when does it pick up item stats?
Some other item collection utility only works with items you have on
you when you zone. We go beyond that, watching every item you can see,
including: item links you click on, bazaar merchants, npc merchants, items on
corpses you view, items you see in trade windows, and of course, items you
see while zoning.
Vista? Windows 7? 64-bit?
If you're having problems, right-click on the link and choose 'run as administrator'.
You may also need to upgrade to WinPcap version 4.x, if you have an older version installed.
It can be found here, but Item Collector's current installer should already contain it.
Ok, you didn't answer my question, what now?
